The Ivy: Nostalgia Meets Modern Synth
The Ivy’s sounds like 80’s and 90’s nostalgia, think Madonna’s Frozen or Take A Bow?? How about Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time? And for the 90s kids, Gin Blossoms, GooGoo Dolls… add the layers of synth bopping tunes from Shawn and Wyett.
Their first single release – Gold has set the tone for the Ivy’s distinct sound. With lyrics ” take me back to the summer air, when a shadow of innocence remained
“Oh, take me back to the golden feeling I had when I was young”
People who grew up in the 80s and 90s can easily say those were some of the best times of their lives as teenagers and young adults. It truly was an era of gold and innocence.
Summer days, beach waves, the afternoon sun, laughter, and friendship—all of these memories come rushing back when listening to Gold.
Meanwhile Have You Ever Been in Love brings back the feelings of first love, puppy love, and childhood crushes.
The lyrics are carried by powerful bass and heartfelt vocals, making you feel like we were all the same kids navigating first love and heartaches in the 90s.
The Ivy’s first EP – Next Stop, followed by another single Better In My Head cemented their millions streams on Spotify. But they are not yet done making runaway daydream music, it keeps getting better – We Move Faster At Night, their second EP has all my favorite tracks.
Can we talk about We Move Faster At Night EP
Since it was released during the pandemic, it became the soundtrack of my stay at home life. How about you?
Give Me A Try, another head bopping single featured the trio (Zach, Wyatt and Shawn) on skateboards. I bet they had fun shooting the video when the streets were empty and most people were at home.
My favorite lines from the song, “Oh, feeling something unfamiliar, Taking one more chance won’t kill ya, Could be that one in a million, Fall into a future unknown” – definitely falls into the narrative of uncertain times during pandemic.
Missing Out, It Was Always You and Runaway Daydream are my favorite tracks on repeat.
The Midnight has done a fantatic job on remix of Missing Out, keeping the technical arrangement of The Ivy intact. It was released simultaneously with another single That Way in 2020.
Now turned duo (only Wyatt and Shawn), continues making music for The Ivy – with a new layer of soft pop on their 3rd EP – Look Inside.
I don’t know why no one’s talking about it. I can’t pick any bad song from the Look Inside EP. All tracks are my ultimate favorites.
Here’s my rundown review of each tracks:
Life – I would play it on a long drive, going nowhere with no itinerary. A spontaneous decision, last minute of saying YES to a new life, no promises, no guarantee yet surprisingly outcome.
Of course I did some dance routine video for Life:
Records – is another banger at the same time it’s a bittersweet song. Breaking up, moving on and forgetting about those memories . It’s a record that keeps playing in your head.
Hurts Just Right – I think of it as a sentimental extension of Records. It’s an aftermath of the break up. They have a lot of these sappy synth or sometimes electrified songs that were all about heartaches. If you don’t pay attention to the lyrics, you will interpret it as all happy tunes that you can dance with.
Like their song Too Much. I like it that it has layers that you can interpret it any way you like. Here’s to the soundtrack of my travels.
Loosen Up – the voice of Wyatt and some musical arrangements here reminds me of Flor . I know that Wyatt is also a fan of Flor. Would it be nice if they will produce music together soon?
Feel Every Bit – another layer of heartbreak or just deep emotions about love. They are very good on writing and masking sentiments that it’s up to the listeners to interpret.
