Why do they hire people like you and me? 99% most of the time startups are looking to grow and scale within 6 months to sell their brands fast to investors, white label B2B scale. Most of the time, they also don’t make it in a year or 2 year’s time and they will run out of funding before getting the big break.
That’s why it’s crucial that they hire someone to bring in revenue in terms of customer acquisition fast with turn around time of 3 months to 6 months. But they can’t just hire everyone right? Startups are so overwhelm and confuse who are the real experts when it comes to Acquisition versus Branding versus Social Media versus Web Development which they all label into one Category: Digital Marketing.
Startups are fast-paced, high-stakes environments where growth is essential, and every decision counts. More often than not, they hire professionals like us because they need immediate results. Whether it’s customer acquisition, digital strategy, or scaling their business, startups are looking to grow and scale within six months. However, the harsh reality is that most startups don’t make it beyond the first two years due to running out of funding before hitting their “big break.”
This urgency underscores the importance of hiring the right talent—someone who can generate revenue and drive customer acquisition with a quick turnaround, typically between three to six months. But startups can’t just hire anyone. They’re often overwhelmed, confused, and unsure about the differences between acquisition, branding, social media, and web development, which they lump together or mostly known today as “hybrid talent.”
What Does an Acquisition Expert Look Like?
An acquisition expert is someone who delivers measurable results, particularly in terms of converting audiences into paying customers. When startups approach me, their requests are often ambitious: target everyone, on every platform, with the smallest budget possible. This scattergun approach is ineffective.
Startups frequently show me their analytics and previous ad campaigns. The metrics they’ve been chasing—views, traffic, and engagement—might have looked good at first but didn’t lead to conversions. Over time, they become frustrated and start searching for the one person who can solve their problems. This is where experts like us come in.
The first thing I ask is: “Who is your target audience?” Surprisingly, many startups struggle to answer this question. They resist focusing on a specific market segment, preferring to target “everyone.” This approach dilutes their efforts and leads to wasted ad spend. My role is to help them refine their strategy, identify their ideal audience, and prioritize campaigns that drive conversions rather than vanity metrics.
The Challenges of Working with Startups
Over the past 12 years in digital marketing, I’ve noticed a recurring trend: startups often want to target everyone, regardless of whether it adds value to their business. They focus on short-term goals like downloads or subscribers rather than long-term sustainability.
For example, game publishers and software developers often prioritize quantity over quality. Their sole objective is to amass millions of downloads or subscribers, which they hope will make their product attractive to investors. If you’re someone who prioritizes strategic branding or meaningful audience engagement, working with these types of startups can be disheartening. Their “numbers game” approach leaves little room for creativity or long-term planning.
On the other hand, solopreneurs and small business owners often face a different set of challenges. These self-starters usually have excellent business ideas and value-driven offerings, but they struggle with traffic and visibility.
They often ask:
“Why isn’t my website ranking on search engines?”“Why isn’t anyone contacting me despite my active social media presence?”
The answer is usually SEO. Many solopreneurs have outdated websites that aren’t mobile-friendly, or they publish high-quality content that isn’t optimized for search engines. Their user journey is often cumbersome, requiring potential customers to navigate multiple steps just to book a service or make a purchase. These issues can be fixed, but there’s often resistance to change. Many solopreneurs have an emotional attachment to the websites or content they’ve built themselves, making it difficult for them to embrace new strategies.
Why Startups Need Experts
Startups need acquisition experts who can cut through the noise and deliver results.
Here’s what makes an acquisition expert invaluable:
Focus on ROI:
Acquisition experts prioritize strategies that lead to tangible results, such as leads, sales, and customer retention.
Audience Targeting:
They help startups identify and focus on the most relevant audience segments, maximizing the impact of limited budgets.
Strategic Campaigns:
Instead of chasing vanity metrics, acquisition experts design campaigns that drive meaningful engagement and conversions.
Data-Driven Decisions:
They analyze metrics to refine strategies, ensuring that every dollar spent contributes to the business’s bottom line.
The Importance of Adaptability
Whether you’re working with a high-growth startup aiming to scale quickly or a solopreneur looking to build a strong brand, adaptability is key. Startups often operate in chaotic environments, with shifting priorities and limited resources. As experts, our job is to bring clarity, focus, and results.
For startups looking to grow fast and sell, the focus is often on acquisition metrics—how many customers can you bring in, and how quickly? For solopreneurs, it’s often about building a strong online presence and generating consistent traffic. Understanding these differences is crucial for delivering the right solutions.
If you’re a startup founder, ask yourself:
What type of startup are you? What kind of acquisition expert are you looking for?Are you ready to focus and adapt to proven strategies?
If you don’t know where to begin, start by identifying your audience and setting clear goals. From there, hire the right expert who can guide you through the process and deliver results that matter.
